The garden design process
Having your garden designed or replanted can sometimes feel a little daunting. But it can also be a great deal of fun and a fantastic opportunity to get creative. Here’s how my process rolls out
-
I visit your garden and meet with you to discuss the kind of garden you are imagining. We pore over pictures of gardens and plantings and discuss what structures you’d like in your garden, materials for edging and paths, plants you like and don’t like, colour ways, textures, shapes, etc until I understand exactly what it is you’re after. I then measure your space and make my initial sketches and go through budgets and timelines.
-
For larger more complex projects I gather as much information as we can on the existing site.
This can be captured in a detailed topographical survey which describes boundaries, levels, structures, trees and any site specific features that need consideration.
For smaller, less involved sites we can create a more basic survey which captures boundaries and features that may impact the design.
-
After writing up what we discussed during our consultation, I draw up a number of garden layouts that meet with your vision. These are then presented to you for consideration and once you have chosen a design that you are happy with I can make any amends and it is signed off.
-
Measurements and layout details are then added to the design so that our landscape contractor can quote for creating the garden and set the plan into motion.
-
Next comes the fun bit… plotting out what plants will populate your borders. My planting document includes information such as height, colour, blooming time, planting conditions and everything you might need to know about the plants I’ve chosen for your garden. And most importantly why those plants should thrive in the position I’ve put them in.
-
I return to your garden and go through the final planting design, talking through what I’ve chosen and taking in any amends you wish to make until you are happy with everything.
